If you haven’t yet experienced the charm that is The Durrells you are missing out. Set in the 1930s and based on the book by Gerald Durrell called My Family and Other Animals, the TV drama is a depiction of Gerald Durrell and his family’s adventures as they adapt to life on the beautiful island of Corfu.
The first series was an instant success, with the island of Corfu itself playing its role in the story with its luscious olive groves, wild countryside, and lots and lots of wildlife. Now on its fourth season The Durrells is coming to an end, but in it’s running it has portrayed delightfully the islands natural beauty and relaxed charm, making us all ‘wish we were there’ sunbathing on the sandy beaches and secluded bays, and swimming in the sparkling clear waters and exploring the countryside.
The widow of Gerald Durrell still lives on the island and played a big part behind the scenes. Series Four was filmed predominantly in the North East of the Island, the cast recently interviewed described these locations as their favorites.
The Durrell School which recognises the work of Lawrence and Gerald Durrell is also in the North of the Island.
